Commercial Banking

Peter D. Carvell
Senior Commercial Banking Officer and Vice President

As a banking professional with 21 years' experience, I have lived in the Brattleboro community for over 40 years. Before joining BS&L in 2008, I gained experience serving as a teller, personal banker, branch manager, consumer lender, and small business lender, working for Vermont National Bank and Chittenden Bank. My industry-specific education includes the New England School for Financial Studies at Babson, the Mass Bankers Association School for Commercial Lending, and extensive training in business development, financial statement analysis, SBA lending, leadership skills, and relationship management. Outside of work, I have volunteered my time serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, President of the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at Holton Home, and Board Member of the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce. My wife, Toni, and I have two grown children, Kyle and Brett, and we reside in Brattleboro with our two rescue dogs, Lola and Rosie. An avid basketball player for over 42 years, I continue to play three times a week at 5 a.m.

Patti Hurd
Commercial Banking Officer and Assistant Vice President

I joined BS&L in 1998 when the commercial department was established and currently as a commercial banker I continue to serve the local businesses in the area.  I am eager to help with all aspects of commercial banking and enjoy assisting the financial needs of the businesses while building relationships with them.

Outside of my work, I enjoy biking, camping, snowshoeing, sewing, and cooking, along with spending time with my husband, three grown daughters and seven grandchildren.

I believe in supporting the community and have done this by serving as former president and secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Brattleboro and other organizations in the community where I live.

Bob Davis
Commercial Banking Officer and Assistant Vice President

I began my career at BS&L in 2009 and have been in the Commercial Banking Department since 2012. In my position as Commercial Banking Officer, I enjoy utilizing my skill set to assist businesses and individuals in our community achieve their financial goals in an everchanging environment. I graduated with a Master of Science in Accountancy from Southern New Hampshire University in 2016 and Bachelor of Science in Accountancy in 2014. I stay active in our community by volunteering for events and currently sit on the Finance Committee of a local non-profit early educational school. 

As a native of Southern Vermont, I enjoy spending my free time outdoors exploring new places. You might see me hiking up a mountain, riding my bike, or refinishing old furniture.

Vice President and Commercial Banking Officer

I joined BS&L as Vice President and Commercial Banking Officer. This role has responsibility for growing the bank's commercial loan and deposit base and portfolios. I bring over 20 years' lending experience to my position. I also support the United Way of Windham County as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors as well as an Incorporator of Kurn Hattin Homes for Children and past President of the Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce.

Commercial Banking Assistant

I joined the Commercial Banking Department in 2016 as the Commercial Banking Assistant.  I have an extensive background in customer service and administrative functions having spent 14 years in Retail Management and 17 years as a Department Coordinator at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. I am familiar with this area having lived in Brattleboro for over 25 years.  Working at BS&L provides the unique opportunity to work with our customers professionally and with the added personal touch that only a community bank can provide.




Vice President Senior Retail Officer

As Vice President and Senior Retail Officer I oversee the Bank’s offices and branches, working with each of the managers and their teams to provide excellent service to our customers.  I frequently collaborate with the operations and technology folks to develop services like our new mobile banking apps, mobile check deposit and cash management services for businesses.  I love helping our customers, both individuals and businesses, achieve their financial goals throughout the various stages of their lives – it’s a great feeling to know that I’ve made a difference!  Working at BS&L allows me to be involved and engaged in both our business and our community, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Branch Manager Putney Road Office

I joined Brattleboro Savings & Loan in 2015, and I am excited to put my 27 years' experience working with local customers and businesses to work building a strong team, and bringing our commercial and personal services and expertise to our Putney Road Branch. I look forward to meeting you, and providing you, and all of our customers, superior service.

Branch Manager, Wilmington Branch

As a long-time resident of the Deerfield Valley I was very happy to find a position with a strong, local, community-minded bank as Brattleboro Savings & Loan. I have over 30 years of management experience in banking and restaurant industries. I served 8 years as Secretary, on the Board of Directors for the Southern Vermont Deerfield Valley Chamber of Commerce and have volunteered for various organizations in the Deerfield Valley community. BS&L provides customers with the best products and customer service and I am proud to be able to say I am able to continue that tradition.

Outside of the bank I enjoy camping, reading and travelling. My other hobbies are vegetable and flower gardening and home improvement projects, and I can use power tools like a pro!

Teller /Personal Banker

I have been working for Brattleboro Savings & Loan for almost 6 years, and I am a Teller at the Putney Road Office.  Besides being a teller, I also fill in as Customer Service and Supervisor whenever needed.  I enjoy working with people, so assisting customers with daily banking needs is important to me.

Receptionist/Information Desk Main Office

I have worked at Brattleboro Savings & Loan since 2006, and I make a point to acknowledge and greet all customers entering the bank and then direct and assist them to their area of interest.  I provide general administrative support to the retail area, and I am the Community Room contact. Often called “the face of the bank”, I’m usually the first person customers come in contact with, and as such, I think it’s important to welcome every customer and greet them by name whenever possible.


I am a Teller at Brattleboro Savings & Loan and and have worked at the bank since 2016. I’m an energetic, fun person with a great personality. I bring excellent customer service skills and smiles to BS&L. I reside in NH with my fiancé, my beautiful baby boy and my four legged child.

Personal Banker

I have been with Brattleboro Savings and Loan since 2017.  Although I have worked in banking for quite a few years, working for such a community-focused bank is a real treat.  My favorite part of the job is the customers!  I enjoy working with customers to help them reach their financial goals and to help them resolve any questions they have.


I joined Brattleboro Savings and Loan in 2018. When I'm not at the bank, I enjoy hiking and anything outdoors. I look forward to meeting you and providing you with excellent customer service.

Universal Banker

I became a part of Brattleboro Savings and Loan October, 2017.  In my bag is 10-years' customer service experience and background in journalism and public service.  As a part of the Retail Department, it is my goal to deliver stellar customer service all the time.  It is my daily objective to resolve customer's concerns and end every transaction on a high and positive note.


I became a teller at Brattleboro Savings and Loan’s Putney Road branch in November 2018. With 9 years of customer service and customer loyalty, I have enjoyed fulfilling my passion by providing exceptional service to our community. Outside of the bank, you will see me out and about having fun with my fiancé and our friends. I love to kayak and swim in Vermont’s beautiful lakes and rivers during the summers and curl up on the couch with a blanket to watch Marvel Movies during the winters.

Teller, Wilmington Branch

I am a local from Wilmington and involved in the community and customer service focused. I joined Brattleboro Savings & Loan in 2018 and am excited to help our customers in the Wilmington branch. In addition to providing a great banking service, I am an EMT for Deerfield Valley Rescue and a first responder in my home town of Whitingham where I live with my husband, daughter and furry children. I have many years experience in the nursing and hospitality industries.


I joined the teller team in August 2018 bringing 10 years of customer service and management skills with me. During my free time, I enjoy playing and watching sports along with spending time outdoors with my wife. I look forward to learning new tasks to better serve our customers with their daily needs.


I joined Brattleboro Savings and Loan in 2018. I have over 9 years of experience in customer service, recently leaving retail management. I live in Brattleboro with my fiancé and daughter. In my free time I enjoy being outside horseback riding and traveling to Nova Scotia in the summertime. I look forward to meeting everyone and providing excellent customer service.


I joined Brattleboro Savings and Loan in August of 2018 and I’m excited to bring my almost 20 years of customer service experience to the teller line. You may recognize me from my 9 years as a waitress at the Ninety-Nine Restaurant in Brattleboro. Originally from New Hampshire, I fell in love with this area when I was a student at Marlboro College. My fiancé and I now live in West Halifax with our young son and many animals. One of my favorite hobbies is baking, so if you’re lucky, you’ll come to the Wilmington branch on a day I’ve baked cupcakes!

I have years of experience in the mortgage industry in the greater Boston area, where I originated loans and ran several mortgage production offices. I've also worked extensively in sales and business development, including several years with the Association of Restaurant Owners for Sustainable Earth. I'm an avid hiker and multi-season camper.

I previously worked at Raymond James Investment Advisors where I served as Operations Specialist for several years. Prior to that, I was Client Service Associate at RBC Wealth Management. I am a member of the Manchester Lion’s Club.

I am a native Vermonter who grew up in Brattleboro and I have been working in the real estate industry since 2002. I have worn many hats- managing a large realty office specializing in the sale and rental of investment properties and also as a real estate paralegal and title abstractor for 11 years, for several years in Brattleboro. Most recently I worked at a national title company in Rhode Island, where I facilitated closings in multiple states.  The beauty of the mountains and the sense of community in Brattleboro brought me back to the area and I am thrilled to take the next step as a Mortgage Processor at BS&L. Having worked with the bank on the other side of real estate transactions for many years prior to joining the team, I know the mortgage team at BS&L is first rate. I hope to enrich the team with my strong customer service background and varied experiences in the industry. My goal is always a positive and well-informed experience for our customers. My husband Peter and I reside in Brattleboro with our son, Jack and our two dogs, Bo and Max. We enjoy exploring the beauty of the outdoors and the culture of our wonderful community.

I have been providing customer service, product innovation, marketing and operations expertise for over 25 years in Windham and Cheshire Counties.

Customer Operations Manager

I joined BS&L in 2005 and throughout the years, I’ve been dedicated to serving the financial needs of our customers in our Retail, Mortgage and Operations areas.  In my current position as Customer Operations Manager, I focus on guiding our customers through all areas of electronic banking including debit cards, online banking, mobile banking and cash management services.  I work closely with other department managers and their teams to enhance our products and services.

In all the various positions I have held at BS&L, the one consistent factor is my passion for giving superior customer service to my community.

Operations Risk Specialist

A lifelong resident of the Brattleboro area, I have worked behind the scenes since 2007 providing our valued customers with a variety of account assistance, including online banking, and debit/ATM card security.

Item Processing Specialist

I have been with the community-based BS&L bank since 2016.  My journey started as a teller, working the retail sector of the bank at our main office.  I am now in the Operations Department.  In this role, I assist in processing items through the next phase of completion.  As a local customer of the neighborhood-friendly bank myself, I have always appreciated the warm and welcoming atmosphere BS&L brings to our community.  I look forward to continuing to assist in strengthening the connection between our bank and our customers.

Customer Operations Specialist

I joined the BS&L family in the Spring of 2018, bringing over 14 years' experience in various customer service roles.  As a member of the Operations team, I focus on debit card access and security, online banking, daily operational reporting, and general account assistance.  I am passionate about providing excellent customer service and feel that every conversation held is an opportunity to enhance someone’s day.  When I am not working with our wonderful customers, I am at home making memories with my husband and our four beautiful, and always entertaining boys.

Customer Operations Analyst

I have been in the customer service field for 12 years. Although this is my first experience in a bank setting, I am excited to bring my customer service experience to the Customer Operations department where I audit daily reports and events. I work on assisting customers with online banking and general account information. I enjoy this field because it allows me to help others and on occasion a good conversation can turn someone’s day around. When I’m not working, I enjoy going to the gym, attending outside food and beverage events and hanging out with friends.

I have worked as a banker for more than 25 years, and I now head the Loan Servicing Department at BS&L.  I have the privilege of leading the team that cares for your loan after you’ve signed on the dotted line!

Loan Service Representative

I have been at Brattleboro Savings since 2012 starting as a Teller, then I was promoted to Head Teller and now I am enjoying my Loan Servicing position.  My job consists of assisting customers with questions about their loans, discharging paid off loans, paying taxes and insurance, booking new loans and many other tasks.  I love my team.  They are very supportive and we have a great time together.


Loan Service Representative

I have been with Brattleboro Savings & Loan since 2013 working in Customer Service and Mortgage and Loan Servicing. I have had the privilege of working in various departments at this institution and seeing how each department and employee contributes to our message here at BS&L: that we are a community-based bank and we care to help you the best way we can.



I am a native Vermonter and have lived in Guilford for most of my life.  I began my career at BS&L in 1983 and have held the position of Controller since 1997.  I enjoy volunteering on Boards and Committees within the community.   I have two children, Travis & Stephanie that both live locally.  I also has a baby Grand-daughter named Audrina!

Finance and Benefits Specialist

I have been our liaison between management and employees for the past six and a half years, handling all Human Resource responsibilities. I cover several areas of finance including Accounts Payable and Payroll. Having grown up in Vermont, I left the state for many years but have since returned and I thoroughly enjoy the many wonders of Vermont.

I have been with the bank for over 30 years, starting as a part timer while still in high school!  I have lived in the Brattleboro area my entire life, growing up in Guilford.  I now live in West Brattleboro with my husband Rick. We have two sons, Eric and Kyle, who also live in Brattleboro

As a banking professional with over 35 years’ experience in community banking, I have the privilege of leading a group of dedicated employees who understand that everything we do, for everyone we meet and help is what sets us apart from the big banks. Southeastern Vermont is an incredible collection of communities that seems almost as if it is one, maybe not so big, community, and my role is to see that we continue a greater than 100-year tradition of providing the best financial services to our customers that can be found here. My office is in the lobby, and when I say my door is always open and you’re welcome to stop in…I mean it!

Tom Martyn
Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Senior Vice President

I’m the Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer.   An employee for (almost) 4 years, and a director for 4 years before that.  I have 36 years of experience in financial and operations management in a wide range of businesses, including public accounting, energy efficient building products, organic spice and coffee trading, engineering services and insurance.   I manage the internal processes that support the lending and retail banking staff in their interactions with our customers.  A very significant part of this role is ensuring that the Bank’s assets and liabilities are properly deployed to create a fair and sustainable return to the Bank while providing sufficient liquidity to meet the Bank’s and our customers’ needs and controlling the Bank’s risk from changes in interest rates.


Assistant Vice President | Compliance Officer | BSA/AML Officer

With over 33 years of banking experience, I have worked at BS&L for the past 24 years. The majority of my time was spent as a Branch Manager, but since 2016, I have been in the Compliance Department. In the tradition of BS&L as a community bank, I am a Commissioner of the Brattleboro Housing Partnerships, which provides low income housing. As part of our ongoing partnership with the Windham Regional Career Center, I also co-teach the Personal Finance class and serve as Chairperson of the Business Advisory Committee.

My outside interests include spending time with my horses and riding my motorcycle in the summer months and snowmobiling in the winter months. My husband, Chris and I live in Guilford with our dog, Kahlua. My son, Troy and his wife, Shelby have two sons, Carson and Devin. Chris and I enjoy being grandparents!


Marketing Director

I have over 24 years of marketing and graphic design experience. My prior experience at a marketing agency specializing in banks, gives me a strong background in banking. My understanding of the importance of our relationship with our communities, will also compliment my new role at BS&L.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband, two daughters, and our golden retriever.

IT Department and Facilities

Vice President Information Systems, CIO

I have over 25 years' experience in information security and banking information systems management. In 2012 I made the move north from south Florida. My focus is banking security, compliance, disaster recovery, and non-banking related deep sea fishing.

Network Engineer

After working in IT and networking in the area for 20 years, I joined Brattleboro Savings and Loan in June of 2019.  Having been a customer for nearly that long, I know the outsized role this organization plays in the community, and I’m excited to contribute to its mission.  While my focus here is servers and network infrastructure, I’m often enjoying gardening or cycling in my spare time.

Computer Specialist

I began my career at Brattleboro Savings & Loan in 2011 as a high school student before working full-time as a Teller and occasional Customer Service Representative. During that time I got to know many of our wonderful customers and am committed to making their experience as best as possible.  In 2015 I transferred to the IT Department as a Computer Specialist where I work with disobedient technology.

Facilities and Security Technician

I am a lifelong resident of Brattleboro. I have been associated with the bank in different capacities for many years and as of 2018 I am now the full-time Facilities Maintenance person. I live in West Brattleboro with my wife Sheila, we have two sons Eric and Kyle.
